United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research – UNU-WIDER PhD Internship

The United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research provides economic analysis and policy advice with the aim of promoting sustainable and equitable development for all. The Institute began operations over 30 years ago in Helsinki, Finland, as the first research centre of the United Nations University. Today it is a unique blend of think tank, research institute, and UN agency – providing a range of services from policy advice to governments as well as freely available original research.

    Our PhD Internship Programme gives registered doctoral students an opportunity to utilize the resources and facilities at UNU-WIDER for their PhD dissertation or thesis research, and to work with UNU-WIDER researchers in areas of mutual interest.

    PhD interns typically spend 3 consecutive months at UNU-WIDER and are expected to return to their home institution afterwards. During their time in Helsinki, PhD interns prepare one or more research papers and present a seminar on their research findings. PhD interns may also have the opportunity to publish their research in the WIDER Working Paper Series.

    When applying in September, you would be visiting UNU-WIDER in the period February-June of the following year.

    UNU-WIDER provides a travel grant to cover the costs of travel to and from the location of your PhD granting institution, medical insurance (for medical and hospital services resulting from sickness and accident during your stay at UNU-WIDER), and a monthly stipend of EUR 1,600 to cover living expenses in Helsinki during the period of their internship. The programme does not cover expenses related to dependents.


Traineeships at the European Ombudsman

Location (s): Brussels & Strasbourg

Overview

The European Ombudsman offers a limited number of traineeships which are intended to enable the trainees to add to the knowledge and skills they have acquired during their studies by giving them practical experience.

Details

The European Ombudsman offers traineeships to university or higher education graduates with a keen interest in European Union public administration and, in particular, in how the EU administration relates to citizens.

The Traineeship Notice will specify the streams[1] in which traineeship opportunities will be available each year.

Applicants shall be selected according to their merits, taking into account the interests of the service and the financial and logistical capacity of the Office to receive trainees in an appropriate working environment.

Without prejudice to the specific qualifications and selection criteria provided in the Traineeship Notice, candidates should, as a minimum, possess a 3-year university degree or diploma or other qualification at a corresponding level.

Trainees shall be assigned to Strasbourg or Brussels, depending on the needs of the Office and the interest of the service.

Aim of a traineeship

A traineeship is intended to provide recent graduates with practical experience of the work of the European Ombudsman and to enable them to build on the knowledge and skills acquired during their studies.

The tasks of trainees, depending on the stream of the particular traineeship will include assisting in the investigation of complaints, assisting in the area of media and communications, work on IT projects or on research relevant to the work of the Ombudsman. Trainees work under the direct supervision of an official or agent of the European Ombudsman, normally a Head of Unit or equivalent.

Duration

The maximum duration of a traineeship is a full year.

A traineeship is initially offered for a period of four months and will, upon satisfactory completion of the four months period, normally be extended for another eight months, provided both parties agree.

Candidates should:

  1. be nationals of a Member State of the European Union, or of a candidate country for accession to the EU;
  2. have a university degree or diploma of at least three years (or an equivalent qualification) in one of the disciplines mentioned in footnote 1;
  3. have a thorough knowledge of one of the official languages of the European Union and a good knowledge of a second. The main working language of the European Ombudsman’s office is English. A very good knowledge of English is therefore required;

The level of financial support for trainees in receipt of external support will be determined on an individual basis.
Scholarships are available to trainees who do not have other means of financial support for a period of three months. The value of scholarships is 25% of the basic salary of staff on grade AD6 step 1 (i.e. around 1200 € in Brussels or 1400 € in Strasbourg), including a household allowance, where appropriate.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a graduate who is looking to apply their knowledge and enthusiasm of digital marketing in a small business. This will be a hands-on role with plenty of responsibility which is why we’re looking for someone who is a fast learner, highly organised, resourceful, independent, creative and ambitious!

Your role is to support the Sales Director across a whole number of tasks:

  • Co-ordinate and manage e-mail marketing campaigns
  • Co-ordinate content production with internal and external partners (images/video/copy)
  • Manage contact lists (CRM)
  • Administration of website (CMS and WordPress) and co-ordinate updates
  • Co-manage social media channels
  • Plan, co-ordinate and attend marketing events

Google Policy Fellowship in Europe and Africa (different deadlines)

Overview

Are you an undergraduate, graduate or law student interested in internet and technology policy? Do you want to get involved in the public dialogue on these issues? If so, the new Google Policy Fellowship pilot programs in Italy, Belgium (Brussels), and three African countries may be for you. Successful applicants to the program will have the opportunity to work at public interest organizations at the forefront of debates on internet policy issues. They will be assigned a mentor at their host organizations and will have the opportunity to work with senior staff members.

Details

Fellows will be expected to make substantive contributions to the work of their organization, including conducting policy research and analysis, drafting reports and white papers, attending government and industry meetings and conferences, and participating in other advocacy activities.

The work of the fellows is decided between the individuals and the organizations. Google provides a small stipend during the period of the fellowship, but has no involvement in defining or conducting the research. Typically, the fellows are postgraduates and they work with the organization on an area of research or study.

For example, in previous years, a fellow with the Strathmore Law School in Nairobi, Kenya, carried out a review of cyber-security conventions around the world, and a fellow at the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT in Ghana helped to establish the Creative Commons chapter for Ghana before returning to university to finish her Ph.D. All work is carried out independently of Google.
